What is teeth grinding and what treatment is there for it?
Bruxism is the term used to describe teeth grinding. It is not completely understood why some people grind their teeth however their are a number of factors of which are linked to it. Often the tension caused by this can result in increase temple volume and headaches.
The main factor is often stress and anxiety - this happens due to the increase of adrenaline within the body, realising large amounts of unused energy which then manifests in to teeth grinding.
Other factors include sleep problems such as snoring and sleep apnea, taking certain medications such as antidepressants and also consuming an increased amount of caffeine and alcohol.
At Klnik we have just the treatment. With the use of botulinumtoxin A, the same substance used for anti-wrinkle treatments is injected into the Masseter muscle. The neurotoxin temporarily paralyzes the muscle reducing teeth grinding and in turn reduces headaches. This often causes a slimming affect of the face as the Masseter muscle decreases in size.
The results from this will usually be seen two weeks post treatment and the duration of results usually last 3 to 4 months, however this varies person to person depending on your metabolism.
What will happen on the day of treatment?
- Following your consultation, a medical questionnaire will be filled out which will deem whether you are suitable for treatment.
- A series of before and after pictures will also be taken at various angles and expressions. This will therefore allow us to compare the outcome of your treatments to ensure we reach your desired result.
- Your skin will then be cleansed and the botox solution drawn up. We do not use numbing creaming for botox injections as we feel it is unnecessary for this treatment. Botox adminidteration is considered relatively pain free and will be over within a few minutes.
- The risk of brusing from botox is relatively low however we ask that you do not lie down for 5 hours after treatment, you refrain from physical activities and extreme heat following the procedure. It is also advised to avoid make up on the area for 24 hours as this could lead to an infection.
- You will then attend a follow up appointment 2 week prior to treatment to ensure you are happy with the treatment. As botox can have varied affects on different people, the amount given may need to be topped up.
